Niche Characterization of Shrub Functional Groups along an Atlantic-Mediterranean Gradient

چکیده

The identification of the factors controlling understory species distribution and abundance is essential to understand ecology dynamics natural forests their management response. We assess relationships between environmental gradients shrub functional groups patterns niche characteristics in a transitional area Eurosiberian Mediterranean biogeographic regions Northern Spain. Here, 772 plots from 3rd Spanish National Forest Inventory were used. Shrub respond same complex as trees, i.e., north-south climatic gradient slope gradient. Unimodal response curves families dominate along both gradients, providing evidence successful turnover. Similar tree species, location functionally related shrubs close. Functional occupying environments with sharp contrast or have broadest niches, whereas those specialized localized habitats showed narrowest niches. knowledge distributions will improve our ability discuss potential conservation goals threats due land-use changes future climate change.

Niche Partitioning Along an Environmental Gradient

Biological systematics studies suggest that species are discretized in niche space. That is, rather than seeing a continuum of organism types with respect to continuous environmental variations, observers instead find discrete species or clumps of species, with one clump separated from another in niche space by a gap. Here, using a simple one dimensional model with a smoothly varying environmen...

Annual plant–shrub interactions along an aridity gradient

Annual plants in semi-arid and arid areas are often closely associated with shrubs. The degree of association largely depends on the balance of negative and positive effects between these contrasting plant life-forms, ranging from interference to facilitation. Since positive interactions are predicted to become less important with increasing rainfall, the interaction balance is expected to shif...

Biogeochemical and Ecomorphological Niche Segregation of Mediterranean Woody Species along a Local Gradient

According with niche theory the species are specialized in different ecological niches, being able to coexist as result of a differential use of resources. In this context, the biogeochemical niche hypothesis proposes that species have an optimal elemental composition which results from the link between the chemical and morphological traits for the optimum plant functioning. Thus, and attending...

Variation of Plant Functional Groups along Livestock Grazing Gradient in Semi-steppe Rangelands (Case Study: Tangsayad Rangelands of Chaharmahal Bakhtiari Province, Iran)

Assessment and monitoring of rangeland in different grazing managements seems necessary to manage rangelands. The plant functional groups can be used as appropriate responders for rangelands condition and management. Therefore, this study was performed and aimed to determine the most important traits that are influenced by rangeland variation and management. In order to this, three areas along ...

Geochemical characterization of the forest loess soils along a precipitation gradient in Northern Iran

Introduction: The loess-paleosol sequences in Northern Iran are important archives represent several cycles of Quaternary climate change and can be used to complete the information gap on loess between Europe and central Asia. Loess geochemistry reflects paleoweathering conditions and it can be used to determine the nature and provenance of loess deposits. In the Caspian Lowlands, a pronounced...
